Cradle of Freedom Tour
The beautiful town of El Retiro dates back to the seventeenth century when the Spaniard Ignacio Castañeda and his wife Javiera Londoño, settled here to exploit the mines of El Guarzo with their slaves. In the mid-1700s, Doña Javiera signed a will in which she gave freedom to her slaves and gave them the most productive of her mines. They were the first to free slaves in America. From then on, the settlement of white, mestizo, mulatto and freed blacks began.
We will start our tour in the historic center of El Retiro, where we will be able to admire the colonial architecture of the church and other old buildings. Next, we will visit the Market Square, where you can try some of the delicious local products, such as fruits, vegetables and typical sweets.
Afterwards, we’ll head to the outskirts of town to visit some of the oldest farms in the region, where you can learn about the production of coffee, avocado, and other agricultural products. We will also visit a traditional cheese factory, where you can taste some of the best cheeses in Antioquia.
